Lilly Pads

In the past, I have loathed those drab, overcast days. Not the ones with majestic storm clouds, not even the ones where rain is pouring in sheets, but the ones where the world is wrapped in a sick, bleak, grey sheet. Those days where you don’t feel like doing anything, much less photographing. That was the setting for this photo. I was at the entrance to the Biopark in Albuquerque, NM and a pair of flowers stood out proudly amidst the lily pads. They had such a ‘so what’ attitude in the face of the cloudy day that it moved me and I captured the moment. The overcast grey sky muted the scene, setting the darks deeply without blacking everything out.

I like how you are able to take mundane places and create such artistic imagery from them. Lately I’ve been learning to do this more since most of my picture opportunities are inside an apartment complex.

I particularly like the deep shadows under the lilly pads. They create a dark line around each one that makes this look almost like a sketch instead of a photograph.

I’m all about overcast days. The diffused light provides great photo opportunities.
